Sodium acetate, also known as acetic acid sodium, is an organic compound primarily used as a supplement of organic carbon in the biological denitrification process of wastewater and sewage. It is easily decomposed and utilized by microorganisms, serving as an external carbon source with a rapid denitrification response time, and can be used as an emergency carbon source.

  •   Sodium acetate, also known as acetic acid sodium, is an organic compound with the molecular formula CH₃COONa and a molecular weight of 82.03. The trihydrate form of sodium acetate appears as white crystals, with the molecular formula CH₃COONa ·3H₂O and a molecular weight of 136.08, a relative density of 1.45, a melting point of 58°C, and it weathers in dry air, losing crystallization water at 120°C and decomposing at higher temperatures; anhydrous sodium acetate is a colorless transparent crystal with a melting point of 324°C and is easily soluble in water.

      Liquid sodium acetate and solid trihydrate sodium acetate are mainly used to supplement organic carbon elements in the biological denitrification process of wastewater and sewage, with the following advantages:

      1. Sodium acetate is a low molecular weight organic salt that is easily decomposed and utilized by microorganisms.

      2. As an external carbon source, it has a fast denitrification response time and can be used as an emergency carbon source.

      3. Sodium acetate produced by wet methods will hydrolyze when used in water, resulting in an alkaline solution that can adjust pH.

           Uses
           1. Food industry: commonly used as a flavoring agent and preservative, it can extend the shelf life of food and improve flavor, such as in the production of soy sauce, vinegar, jam, and other foods.
           2. Pharmaceutical industry: an important component of many drugs, clinically used for various medical treatments.
           3. Cosmetics industry: can adjust pH and is used as a moisturizing agent.
           4. Industrial sector: used in the manufacture of dyes, fragrances, plastics, and other chemicals, and also in metal surface treatment.
           5. Water treatment sector: can enhance the denitrification capacity of biological treatment systems in wastewater treatment plants, serving as an external carbon source to address the issue of insufficient carbon sources in low-carbon high-nitrogen wastewater.
